Tyr is a key God of War Ragnarök character, basically Kratos’ equivalent in Norse mythology. This character has been in the middle of a number of plot theories and has been heavily featured in the game’s marketing. However, his role in the story will stay shady for a long while.
Spoiler alert: stop reading if you’ve not completed God of War Ragnarök’s main quest.
Is Tyr alive in God of War Ragnarök?
In God of War Ragnarök, as you know, Tyr is in chains, imprisoned by Odin in an extreme effort to prevent him from triggering Ragnarök. Things are not as easy as they look, though).
Around the end of the main story, it’s revealed that the Tyr you’ve set free at Svartalfheim is none other than Odin in disguise. As shared in the game, Odin can turn into anyone as long as they’re alive, and this suggests that Tyr – despite being exploited for the Allfather’s shady purposes – hasn’t been killed, after all.
In one of the biggest twists in the game, God of War Ragnarök even allows you to find the true Tyr through one of the endgame quests you’ll find at the end of the story. Here’s what you need to do in order to finally meet him in person.
From Sindri’s House, or from any place across the nine realms, access a fast travel gate and get to Niflheim – by now, the game should tell you to play “The Eyes of Odin” Favor there. Choose “The Raven Tree” as your destination.
Once there, take your second left, which you’ll notice now leads to an entirely new location. Doing so, you’ll trigger “The Broken Prison” Favor, which allows you to access the true prison where Odin has been hiding Tyr across the entire story. Tyr is there waiting for you, and will actually meet Kratos for the first time.
After chatting a bit, Tyr will tell you he’ll want to travel across the realms so he can enjoy his newfound freedom. And it’s not just a saying – if you keep exploring, you’ll actually meet him in other realms, precisely Freyr’s Outpost in Vanaheim and in Alfheim.
