God of War Ragnarök: All Nornir chest locations

Nornir chests are vital to becoming powerful in God of War Ragnarök. Get enough of their unique loot and you’ll be able to upgrade either your maximum health or your rage meter, both of which are vital to staying alive in combat. While the chests themselves usually aren’t too hard to find, they need to be opened by smashing/striking three rune stones/bells, which are often difficult to find.

We’ll walk you through the game, telling you where to find each chest, and where the runes are in order to open them.

Aurvangar Wetlands Nornir Chest 1

You’ll encounter this chest very quickly once you start your journey, coming in the same area where the puzzle involving the wheel blocking the river takes place in the Wetlands.

• Rune 1 – Just to the right of the chest.
• Rune 2 – Behind the chest on a small island.
• Rune 3 – Freeze the nearby geyser, grapple up, and the rune is next to the tree.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Aurvangar Wetlands Nornir Chest 2

This chest is in the northwest of the map, hidden by an alcove that you need to row under. It’s best to wander around the area first to deal with any enemies that pop up before you go hunting for the runes.

• Rune 1 – Freeze the geyser to the right of the chest to reveal a pillar. Throw your axe to rotate it twice until it matches the leftmost rune on the chest.
• Rune 2 – Starting from the chest, run past it and climb up where the next pillar is on the right. Rotate it until it matches the rightmost rune.
• Rune 3 – Drop down to the area behind the chest. Rotate it until it matches the middle rune.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Bay of Bounty: Dragon Beach Nornir Chest

• Rune 1 – Behind the spout of a geyser that’s behind the chest. Freeze the geyser to see it.
• Rune 2 – Opposite the dragon statue by the shore, you’ll also need to freeze a geyser to see it.
• Rune 3 – Behind the dragon statue, you’ll need to go down the back to get an angle on it.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

 

Bay of Bounty Nornir Chest — ignite the torches to light the three runes

• Torch 1 – To the left of the chest, use the Blades of Chaos to shoot a burst of flame at it by holding R2.
• Torch 2 – Follow the circle that goes right from the chest. There are two barrels you’ll need to destroy with sonic arrows to reach the torch.
• Torch 3 – Go to the corner opposite the chest, the torch is behind an iron fence. To reach it, stand on the wooden platform across from it and throw your ax at the explosive jar.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Alberich Island Nornir Chest

This is the first chest that uses bells. You must hit all three in quick succession to unlock the chest.

• Bell 1 – Just behind the chest.
• Bell 2 – In the corner opposite the chest, hidden behind a gate. Use the wooden board to the left to raise it up so you can hit it – it’s recommended you hit this one first, as raising it up can take too long.
• Bell 3 – Opposite bell 2 on the other side of the wooden structure, hidden behind a gate. Get Atreus to fire a sonic arrow at the wooden pillar so you can drop down and get it.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Jarnsmida Pitmines Nornir Chest

Just before the mines is an open-air section, this chest requires you to light torches.

• Torch 1 – To the left of the chest.
• Torch 2 – Left of Torch 1, drop down to see it. Freeze the water in the trough above first or the torch won’t light.
• Torch 3 – Across from Torch 2. Grapple across the gap but don’t recall your ax. There is also a lore marker next to it.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Groa’s Secret - Alfheim: The Strond Nornir Chest

You’ll find this one as you’re following Tyr, while on the lookout for Groa’sm Shrine. Once you’ve pushed through the crack exit the main path and drop down on the left to find it. You’ll have to light lanterns for this one.

• Lantern 1 – Drop down on the section closest to the crack, the lantern is on the left, by the cliff’s edge.

• Lantern 2 – On the overlook on the south side of the chest, look down to see the lantern.

• Lantern 3 – Go back up onto the main path and follow it south. There is another place to drop down on the left, you’ll find the last lantern and a path leading you back to the chest.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Temple of Light Nornir Chest

A ways into the Temple of Light there’ll be a chest at the base of a grand staircase. This is a bells-based chest one, so you’ll have to be quick on your feet.

• Bell 1 – To the right of the chest, Atreus will need to fire a sonic arrow at the debris blocking it. You’ll then need to throw your ax at the twilight stone on the wall to hit it. Due to the more complex requirements, it’s best to strike this bell first.
• Bell 2 – To the left of the chest.
• Bell 3 – To the left of Bell 2, slightly higher up.
• Rewards – Horn of Blood Mead.

Secret of the Sands - The Below Nornir Chest

You’ll need to trigger the side quest Secret of the Sands before you can get this one. You can get it when you first enter The Canyons in Alfheim by talking to Sindri. It’s recommended you do the quest first anyway, as it will clear up the storm and make exploring The Barrens much easier.

This chest is along the path you chased the creature during that quest. After you’ve gone down the zipline and slaughtered plenty of elves go to the area with the large concrete pillar you can grapple onto. Grapple onto the pillar to your right and then onto the ground, you’ll be stood by a locked door. You’ll then go down a ledge where you’ll fight some enemies and then another where you’ll find the chest.

Once you’ve found it, go onto the middle level where you fought the enemies and throw your ax at the nearby twilight stone so that it bounces off and clears the Dark Elf matter. This will unlock a new grapple point from which you can climb up and around one of the pillars, letting you access a new area and unlock the gate. Once that’s done you can now hit all three bells quickly.

• Bell 1 – In the window on the other side of the locked gate – hit this one first before sprinting to the other two.
• Bell 2 – Opposite the chest.
• Bell 3 – In the opening to the left of the chest.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

The Barrens Nornir Chest

This chest is on the west of the Barrens, it’s inside a small structure covered in Dark Elf root. If you go around the back you’ll find an angle where you can throw your ax to clear the root, then you can go round to the entrance and get inside. You’ll need to light torches to unlock this chest.

• Torch 1 – On the rear side, you can get it from the outside once you’ve cleared the root.

• Torch 2 – By the entrance.

• Torch 3 – On the roof with a red explosive jar next to it.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Southern Wilds Nornir Chest

Onto Vanaheim, you’ll find this one while traveling with Broke and Freya.

• Rune 1 – To the west, on a ridge. You can see it while standing at the chest by looking left.

• Rune 2 – Look east from the chest. It’s covered in vines that you can burn with your blades.

• Rune 3 – Down the southeast path. Look up as you go and you’ll see the pillar covered in vines. You’ll need to burn the glowing vines hanging down in order to reach it.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

The Reckoning - Find a way to cross the broken bridge Nornir Chest

For this one you’ll need to solve a puzzle to get across the bridge.

Start by burning away some bramble near the crane, this will drop a bucket that’s dangling from a rope. Turn the crane until you can grapple over to the ledge on the left, then throw you ax to turn the crane back. Now if you stand on the edge of the platform you should be able to get an angle on the bucket. Setting it alight should burn the brambles stopping you from crossing the bridge.

You’ll need to light torches for this chest, and it will involve using the bucket some more.

• Torch 1 – Stay where you are to solve the puzzle and pull the bucket to the right, lighting the torch.

• Torch 2 – Turn the crane so you can grapple back to your starting position and then pull the bucket towards you.

• Torch 3 – On the other side of the broken bridge. You can light this one directly with your blades.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Godess Falls Nornir Chest

This chest is just to the right of a secret entrance where you’ll start Freya’s personal quest, at the top of the falls. You’re on the lookout for lanterns to light this time.

• Lantern 1 – South of the chest, on a ridge. Get as close as you can then fire three sigil arrows to cover the lantern and the nearby rocks, then ignite them.

• Lantern 2 – Above the falls, look up to the northwest. Fire three sigil arrows on the top and bottom rock, ensuring they intersect. You can then ignite them to light the lantern.

• Lantern 3 – North of the chest. Once again fire sigil arrows along the rocks leading to it, then ignite them.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Vanaheim Nornir Chest - Cliffside Ruins

Pillars for this one, and you’ll want to start by Brok’s shop.

• Rune 1  – Across the water.

• Rune 2 – Halfway up the chain next to a ghost. It’s buried in the wall, so get to one of the platforms across from it to get the right angle.

• Rune 3 – In the west corner, to the right of the chest. It’s behind the cliff and draped in vines. Make a line of sigil arrows, then get across to light them.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Vanaheim Nornir Chest - The Veiled Passage

To the east of Goddess Falls, there is a cave you can sail through with the Nornir chest inside.

This one is a little different, as all three bells are right next to each other, but it’ll require a little ingenuity to ring all three at the same time.

Fire a sigil arrow at the rightmost bell, another to the left of the middle bell, and then two more on that spot so it grows to its largest size. Finally, shoot one to the right of the leftmost bell so that the sigils all intersect.

Now grab a firebomb from the nearby dispenser and throw it at the sigils, this should ring all three at once, unlocking the chest and getting you a Horn of Blood Mead.

Forbidden Sands - Nornir Chest

At the south end of Forbidden Sand you’ll find this chest and three torches you need to light.

• Torch 1 – Next to the chest.

• Torch 2 – Lift the fallen pillar and go into the open area. It is to the north on a rocky outcrop. Use sigils to ignite it.

• Torch 3 – On the east of the rocky archway. Sigil arrows are needed for this one too.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Lake of the Nine Nornir Chest

In the northwest corner of the Lake of the Nine, there’s a climbing route just west of the Shores of the nine.

• Torch 1 – Just before the chest on the path you took to get there.

• Torch 2 – Climb up to the top, turn left in the snow and you’ll see the torch.

• Torch 3 – Behind some icicles. Look down along the way you came to see them. You’ll need to use sigils to light it.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Lake of the Nine Kol Raider Camp Nornir Chest

In a cave in the Lake of the Nine, you’ll need to clear out the Kol Raider camp before you can find it.

• Torch 1 – To the left of the chest, use nearby firebombs to burn the brambles blocking it.

• Torch 2 – Behind golden ore on the north of the room. A firebomb will clear this.

• Torch 3 – Go to the south of the room, by the chasm. Look east and you’ll see it hidden there.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

The Oarsmen Lake of Nine Nornir Chest

You’ll need to go underground near The Oarsmen to find this chest. There are bells to ring, and they require a bit of prep work before you look for them.

First, go up the stairs opposite the way you entered, then climb the chain and drop into the next area. Pull the wooden door to open a shortcut back to the chest. Then interact with the large chain the next room and reveal a staircase. Then fire a sonic arrow at the debris near where you found the Fjorturlund Vault Key Half. Open the gate and you’ll come out next to the chest, and can start ringing the bells.

• Bell 1 – In a cave to the northwest of the room.

• Bell 2 – South of the room.

• Bell 3 – Just beyond the debris you broke with the sonic arrow earlier.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

The Lost Treasury Nornir Chest - Lake of Nine

Near the large vault door – the one made from the Tyr statue’s shield – you’ll find this chest.

• Torch 1 – Use your blades to pull the shield and reveal the first torch. Use sigil arrows to light it.

• Torch 2 – Leave the shield where you pulled it and climb up it, you’ll be able to see this torch once you’ve up there. Once again, use sigil arrows.

• Torch 3 – Under torch 2, fire sigil arrows leading up to some debris. Ignite it to clear the path and knock down the pillar. Drag the fallen pillar left and then drag the shield right, making two gears visible.Pull the nearby crank and freeze one of the gears. Use a sigil arrow to lock it, then recall your ax and freeze the other. Head through the door and you’ll see the torch inside on the right. Break the connector so your companion can come through, then use their sigil arrows to light it.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Svartalfheim wine cellar Nornir Chest

• Torch 1 – Left of the chest. You’ll need to use sigil arrows.

• Torch 2 – Opposite the chest.

• Torch 3 – In the corridor opposite the chest, hidden behind wooden crates.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

The Forge Nornir Chest

You can’t get this one until you’ve visited The Forge with Brok, as you’ll need the spear. For this, you’re on the lookout for three wooden totems. You must impale each of them with a spear and then detonate all three at once.

• Totem 1 – Opposite the chest, in amongst the rocks.

• Totem 2 – To the southeast of the chest, across a small gap.

• Totem 3 – Back towards the train tracks, next to the dangling cart.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Vanaheim Nornir Chest - Eastern Barri Woods

This chest is near a werewolf in the wood of Vanaheim after you’ve got the spear in your hands.

• Rune 1 – To the left of the chest, in a building across the gap.

• Rune 2 – Outside the building the chest is in, to the left.

• Rune 3 – Close to the entrance to where the chest is, hidden behind vines that can be burned away.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Vanaheim Nornir Chest - The Crater

East of The Crater, you’ll need to go down a zipline to get to this chest.

• Torch 1 – Before the zipline on the right. Get on the platform above and light it using sigil arrows.

• Torch 2 – On the right at the end of the passageway the chest is in. Sigil arrows are required.

• Torch 3 – Just out of the passageway. Sigil arrows are required.
• Reward – Horn of the Blood Mead.

Vanaheim Nornir Chest - The Crater 2

The chest is west of Brok’s shop in The Crater.

• Bell 1 – Left of the chest.

• Bell 2 – Right of the chest.

• Bell 3 – Around the back of the rock behind the chest, high up.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Vanaheim Nornir Chest - The Crater 3

This chest is inside a revenant camp in the west of The Crater. Freeze a poison totem using sigil arrows to open the door. Clear out some enemies and then you can hunt for the seals.

• Rune 1 – On a rock on the west of the camp.

• Rune 2 – In a tree on the east of the camp.

• Rune 3 – Behind a tree that’s behind the chest. You’ll need to freeze the poison totem to see it and use the spear to reach it.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Vanaheim Nornir Chest - The Jungle

Once you’ve returned from the river in Vanaheim’s late-game optional quest, you’ll find this chest close to the Mystic Gateway in the south of the area.

• Rune 1 – Right of the chest.

• Rune 2 – East of the sun and moon altar. The pillar will be above you and covered by vines that you can burn.

• Rune 3 – Grapple up to the ledge near the sun and moon altar. The pillar is at the very top of the altar.
• Reward – Horn of the Blood Mead.

Vanaheim Nornir Chest - The Sinkholes

You’ll need to complete the Casualties of War: The Hourglass quest before you can reach this one. After you’ve finished the quest, follow a climbing route by where you turn it in. You’re on the lookout for totems this time.

• Totem 1 – North of where you drop down from the climbing route.

• Totem 2 – South of the area.

• Totem 3  – On top of a ruined pillar west of the chest.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Alfheim Nornir Chest - The Strond 2

Once you have the spear, you’ll need to go to The Strond’s Mystical Gateway and head towards the Temple of Light. However, before you reach the temple you should find a Nornir chest and a wall you can destroy with your spear.

• Totem 1 – Behind the destructible wall.

• Totem 2 – Turn around and head back through the hole in the wall – you’ll see the totem right in front of you.

• Totem 3  – Turn right at totem 2 to see this one.
• Reward – Idunn Apple.

Muspelheim Nornir Chest

Outside of the fighting pits in Muspelheim, there is a rock as you travel deeper in that you can blow up with your spear.

• Torches 1 and 2 – Opposite the chest. You’ll need to create a line of sigil arrows from left to right and ignite them.

• Torch 3 – Behind the chest, up and to the right.
• Reward – Horn of Blood Mead.

Svartalfheim Nornir Chest - Sverd Sands

You’ll have to wait until the postgame to get this one. You’ll need the spear too.

• Totem 1 – High up, south of the chest.

• Totem 2 – To the northwest on a wooden platform.

• Totem 3 – Behind totem 2 on another platform. You’ll need to get close to the chest to see it, as a wooden beam blocks your view.
• Reward – Midgard’s Bravery amulet enchantment. It boosts the damage of your ranged attacks based on your cooldown.

Svartalfheim Nornir Chest - Jarnsmida Pitmines 2

Another postgame chest, this one is near the last Lindwyrn in the Pitmines.

• Totem 1 – West of the chest, hidden among some rubble.

• Totem 2 – East from the platform the chest is on, behind a geyser.

• Totem 3 – Opposite the Mystic Gateway.
• Reward – Svartalfheim’s Fortitude amulet enchantment. It increases your base stun damage, based on Kratos’ defense.

Alfheim Nornir Chest - The Forbidden Sands

The final and hardest Nornir chest in God of War Ragnarök, you must squeeze through the gap in the wall under the library in the north of The Forbidden Sands. Before you do anything you’ll need to bounce your ax off a nearby twilight stone to clear the roots around the chest.

• Torch 1 – North side of the cavern, next to a campfire. Use sigil arrows at the campfire to light it.

• Torch 2 – South side of the cavern, down low. Create a row of sigil arrows from the campfire to the torch.

• Torch 3 – South side of the cavern, hidden behind a wall that opens with sonic arrows. Fire a sigil arrow down the pillar. Fire a sigil arrow at the pillar to the right of torch 2, expanding it to its maximum size and ensuring it intersects with torch 2. Then, use sigil arrow to create a trail up the wall onto the door hiding torch 3.Fire a sonic arrow to open the door then quickly fire a sigil arrow at torch 2 to create a chain reaction and light torch 3.
• Reward – Rare crafting materials.
