Goalkeeper coach Alan Fettis joins new club after leaving Manchester United

Alan Fettis' new club after leaving Manchester United has been revealed as Middlesbrough.

United announced earlier in June that the goalkeeper coach would be leaving Carrington after taking up a new position as a first-team coach at a Championship side. According to the Teeside Gazzette, that club is promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough, who finished just outside the playoffs last season.

Fettis will join Chris Wilder's first-team staff in the North East this week as he begins his new role. The former Northern Ireland international had been with United for more than 10 years. He joined the club in 2011 after being appointed by former goalkeeping coach Eric Steele and Sir Alex Ferguson.

He initially began his stint in Manchester as an academy goalkeeper coach but worked his way up the ranks to train the Under-18s and then the Under-23s, while also being appointed as head of academy goalkeeping in 2018. During his time at the club, he helped develop the likes of Dean Henderson and Sam Johnstone as well as several other talented young shot-stoppers. Fettis also helped out with first-teamers such as David de Gea, Edwin van der Sar and Victor Valdes on occasion.

Earlier this month United's head of academy Nick Cox said: “We are pleased that Alan will fulfil his ambition of coaching senior goalkeepers full-time. He has played an important role in the development of a number of talented goalkeepers in our Academy.

“We take great pride in the pathway for coach progression within our system and this is another good example of the environment that we have created. The whole of the Academy thanks Alan for his service throughout his eleven years at the club and wishes him the very best of luck in his new role.”

Fettis will replace departed goalkeeper coach Ian Bennett at Boro while his own replacement at United is yet to be announced.
