GMP bosses say cops captured on video restraining suspected drug dealer during his arrest acted appropriately

Greater Manchester Police bosses say officers captured on video restraining a suspected drug-dealer during his arrest acted appropriately - and that no complaints had been made following the circulation of the clip on social media.

In the footage, which was shared with the Manchester Evening News, officers appeared to pin a man to the ground as he was detained in Oldham in December. One officer appeared to hit the man in the head several times.

People could be heard shouting at the officers in the clip, with one saying: "You can't hit him like that, I'm recording." The video was shared on several Facebook pages.

GMP said no complaints have been submitted following the incident. They said body worn video footage was reviewed and 'no misconduct was found'.

The man, who is in his 30s, was suspected of dealing drugs, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs following a stop-and-search. He was also arrested on suspicion of three incidents of assaulting an emergency worker; and a racially-aggravated public order offence.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At around 11pm on Friday 30 December 2022, officers were called to reports of a male suspected of dealing drugs on Horsedge Street, Oldham.

"A man in his 30s was detained for a stop search and later arrested on suspicion of 3x assault emergency worker, possession with Intent to Supply class A and racial aggravated public order.

"Following a review of the Body Worn Video footage - no misconduct has been found and no complaints have been submitted."

The man was subsequently bailed pending further investigation.

Superintendent Phil Hutchinson of GMP's Oldham District said: "Police officers in Greater Manchester are committed to keeping the public safe from harm, we endeavour to respond to all reports to protect the communities we serve. This was no different."
