Good Morning Britain took a turn for the unexpected on Thursday morning as Richard Madeley tucked into a serving of roasted and minced crickets live on air — and viewers couldn’t stop talking about it.
The 68-year-old presenter was fronting the show alongside Ranvir Singh, and while they covered all the big headlines of the day, it was Richard’s adventurous snack choice that really stole the spotlight. As the topic turned to the idea of insects being hailed as the “food of the future,” Richard didn’t hesitate to get stuck in.
With campaigners arguing that bugs like crickets and ants are packed with protein, sustainable, and packed with potential health benefits, a conference at Nottingham University is making the case that they should become part of our everyday diet.
Before taking a bite, Richard tried to put things into perspective with a comparison that had viewers both laughing and thinking twice. “My thinking on this is that if we didn’t eat prawns as a dish and suddenly someone said Try eating prawns, most people would go, ‘Why would you want to eat that?’”
Without missing a beat, he popped one of the crickets into his mouth and gave his verdict. To the surprise of many watching, he didn’t flinch — in fact, he was quite into it.
“The flavour is quite light, they’re sort of hollow,” he explained calmly to the camera. “I’d say it tastes a little bit like a very mildly flavoured nut.”
And just in case anyone thought he might be putting on a brave face, he made it clear that he wasn’t just tolerating the cricket, he was actually enjoying it. “There’s nothing revolting,” he said. “There’s no back taste, nothing that makes you want to heave.”

Cue the avalanche of reactions on social media, with viewers sharing their surprise, amusement, and in some cases, disbelief at Richard’s willingness to snack on creepy crawlies so early in the morning. One viewer wrote, “Only Richard Madeley would casually eat a cricket on live telly and treat it like a Walkers crisp,” while another added, “I was expecting a gag or grimace but he’s loving it!”
The segment clearly got people talking, with many now more curious — if not quite ready — to give edible insects a go themselves. Whether or not the nation is about to trade in its morning toast for toasted crickets remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: Richard’s fearless food moment has everyone buzzing.
