Good Morning Britain viewers were left cringing today as one student remarked she "couldn't read" her GCSE results.
The student appeared alongside her friends to open up their GCSE results as thousands of children across the country find out their fate today. The exam boards and government have warned results may be down this year as they returned to normal exams for this set of students, compared with teacher assessed grades during the Covid pandemic.
Nervous Ismat was the third pupil to open her results, and she had an interview later in the day. As talk turned to her results, the presenter shared: "Over to you now, you've been very calm but I can sense some nerves. What do you want?"
Ismat then went on to insist all she wanted was to pass, as she excitedly opened her results. She initially struggled to get the piece of paper out, before finally being able to see her results in front of her.
However, she struggled to read them and the presenter had to step in and tell everyone her results for her.
"I can't even read them," she remarked, as the presenter stepped into help. The student then went to share her results, which included an 8 in English Literature, a 6 in Geography - which earned a sour face from her - and an 8 in French.
Those tuning into the ITV breakfast show were shocked by Ismat's comment that she couldn't read her results.
"Can’t believe they are making kids open their GCSE results live on TV! #GMB," one wrote, as a second viewer penned on social media: "How come the presenter had to read the results for the student... ffs #GMB."
A third shared: " #GoodMorningBritain #GMB Kid that can’t read. Back to School!" with a fourth writing online: "Could’ve picked students who could actually talk and read at the same time #GMB."
Other viewers took to social media to hit out at the opening of results live on air.
"This live GCSE result thing is s***, pressuring them by standing over their shoulder to see what they got, and funny how they never have someone that fails? #GMB," one viewer fumed, as a second wrote: "I feel so bad for kids opening their results on tv, trying to digest it and being rushed by the presenter. It’s nerve wracking enough #GMB."
A third penned: "I hate these exam results opening segments. Just let them open off camera, work out what they’ve got and interview the happy kids. Save us the slow torture of fumbling with envelopes and poor result embarrassments. Sorted that for you #gmb."
"Why is it that when the news select young people to open their GCSE or A-Level results do they always choose those they know or expect to have achieved A*s? Can we normalise lower grades too since these are most common? #GMB," a fourth added.
A fifth concluded: "I really wish news channels would stop doing this thing of putting people on the spot and letting the entire country know their exact exams results. Surely asking them if they got the results they hoped for is enough, if they insist on this."
