GMB's Richard Madeley fumes 'you're joking' at Tory MP as they clash over Liz Truss

Richard Madeley clashed with a Tory MP on Good Morning Britain today over Liz Truss.

The Prime Minister has been heavily criticised for her multiple U-turns over the mini budget unveiled earlier this month and as Sir Christopher Chope, Conservative MP for Christchurch, appeared on the ITV show today, he quickly clashed with Richard.

The MP accused Richard of "sniping" at the Prime Minister and having a "prejudice".

Richard fumed "you're joking" as Mr Chope accused the TV presenter and journalist of "insulting" the Prime Minister. He claimed Richard had a "deep held prejudice", something which Richard quickly fired back at.

During the frosty exchange, Richard asked the MP: "How can you say she's in charge - what is she in charge of?" to which he replied: "Richard, I'm sorry.

"It's a bit early in the morning to engage in insults, but I must say the very nature of your comment shows your deep held prejudice against Ms Truss and the new Conservative comment, and I'm very sorry about that."

"You're joking, you're joking. I have no prejudice against Liz Truss," Richard fumed.

Mr Chope then added: "If she hadn't been charge, if she wasn't in charge, she wouldn't be able to sack her best friend who was the Chancellor. Surely that's an indication someone's in charge and yesterday, Jeremy Hunt and she were discussing what's going to happen in Chequers. And that's an indication that they are working together, rather than Jeremy Hunt."

"They're working together as a team. I'm sorry that you feel it necessary to keep sniping at the Prime Minister and wanting to undermine her authority," he continued as the pair clashed live on air.

Richard then went on to insist he "feels sorry" for Ms Truss.

"I'm not going to waste too much airtime defending myself because I don't care. I'm used to being attacked from various quarters but I can assure you, and you'll have to take my word for this, what I said about Liz Truss was a journalistic statement," he said.

"It really wasn't personal prejudice. I have no prejudice against Ms Truss at all. I feel rather sorry for her actually."

Richard fronted Good Morning Britain today alongside Susanna Reid, as they discussed the upcoming statement being made by new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in the coming hours as the government try to stabilise the markets.
