GMB fans divided as Netflix filmmaker suggests ISIS Bride Shamima Begum is 'victim'

Good Morning Britain viewers found themselves torn whilst tuning into Wednesday's show as filmmaker Andrew Drury was welcomed onto the show.

Andrew has been getting to know ISIS Bride Shamima Begum over the course of a year and has met with her six times for his upcoming documentary Danger Zone.

Shamima was 15 when she left her family home in Bethnal Green and flew to Syria with school friends, Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase, to join ISIS in 2015.

She's desperate to come back to the UK, but her British citizenship has been revoked and she's currently living in Syria.

When host Susanna Reid mentioned that Shamima has been accused of doing horrendous things, such as sewing bombs into vests, Andrew was keen to have his say.

“See, I’ve sat down and I’ve asked those questions on several occasions and have looked her in the eyes and said, ‘Did you sew suicide vests?’ And she said, ‘Categorically no.’ And do I believe her or not? I can’t say yes or no," Andrew explained.

"But the point is always to me, if she was groomed, it does matter what she did when she was out there, but it takes you back to the beginning, is she a victim?

"When she got out there, was she forced into sewing the vests? I don't know," Andrew continued.

It'e been reported that Shamima will undergo a trial in Syria, which she believes will result in the death penalty.

In reference to this, Andrew commented: “No, it’s not correct. There is no death sentence. The SDF doesn't have the death sentence, it was taken away in 2014 and I do know, because I’ve had conversations with the SDF since, that since the newspaper article went out, they’re angered by that because they see that as abhorrent to have the death sentence…”

Andrew continued: “She [Shamima] fears more than anything to be tried in Syria… She said, ‘I can’t be tried in Syria, no no no no no!’ Because she could face 20 years... And she feels if she’s sentenced out there, she’s got no hope of coming back.”

GMB viewers watching at home were certainly divided when it came to Shamima and took to Twitter to comment.

One person argued: "#GMB Shamima Begum is a British Citizen. We are wrong to dismiss her, she was a child that was groomed!! This child needs a fair trial."

Another tweeted: "We can't dump our problems on to someone else. Give Shamima Begum her British citizenship, she was born here. Even we don't like this it is the correct thing to do. #GMB."

However, others weren't so sympathetic as one viewer said: "Nothings changed. We still don't want her back. #GMB."

Someone else posted: "I really don't care what happens to #shamimabegum as long as she doesn't get to come back here. If she goes to court here they'll probably let her off with a fine knowing our justice system."

A third viewer added: "Leave her where she is #gmb," and a fourth said: "I don’t think that today is the day to sell us Shamima Begum as Mary Poppins! #GMB."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
