Gloss finish toasted as Crown Paints' £4.4m expansion primes Hull plant for growth

A £4.4 million expansion of Hull’s Crown Paints manufacturing plant is complete.

The state-of-the-art raw material and packaging warehouse facility has been unveiled, with the investment providing an additional 4,265 sq m of storage.

It paves the way for future growth as operations are consolidated across the Sculcoates Lane site, freeing up space elsewhere.

Hull is the Danish-owned company’s major water-based paint production plant in the UK.

Manufacturing director Ellis Mudd said: “The new multi-million-pound Hull warehouse creates much-needed additional storage space for raw materials and packaging, allowing us to increase

our manufacturing output and improve efficiencies.

“Not only that, but the new modern infrastructure which includes over 500 solar panels contributes significantly to our sustainability strategy.

“We will continue to make significant investments in our manufacturing capability as part of a commitment to the long-term future of our facilities.”

Hull-based construction company Hobson & Porter was the main contractor on the building, launching on site in February last year.

Leader of Hull City Council, Cllr Daren Hale, was invited to the official opening. He said: “Crown Paints can trace its origins in the city to the early 19th century, it is therefore gratifying to see the continued investment in the site and in a business that continues to be a major employer in the city.”

Headquartered in Darwen, Lancashire, where the business began in 1777, Crown is now part of global coatings group Hempel.
