Glock pistol discovered in Scots river by shocked volunteers sparking police investigation

A police investigation has been launched after shocked members of the public found a Glock pistol in an Edinburgh river. Officers were alerted to the firearm discovery in the Water of Leith at around 1.20pm on Thursday, July 21, in the Warriston area of the capital.

Members of the Water of Leith Conservation Trust were clearing invasive plant species from the waterway when they stumbled across the weapon. An image from the scene shows the silver gun lying on the riverbed covered in algae.

Edinburgh Live reports that those who found the weapon confirmed that it must have been underwater for a lengthy period, saying: "It had been in the river for a while so everything was fairly well seized".

One person commented that it must have been a scary walk to the police station carrying a weapon.

The Water of Leith Conservation Trust said on social media: "A day of contrasts down at the Rocheiof the path. Then a visit to Gayfield Police station to drop off a recovered firearm from the river. Never the same day twice."

Police have confirmed that the weapon has since been made safe and they are conducting enquiries into the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were called to a report of a firearm found in the Water of Leith in the Warriston area of Edinburgh at 1.20pm on Thursday 21 July, 2022. The firearm has been made safe and further enquiries are ongoing."
