A recent poll conducted by the Pew Research Center across 34 countries revealed that President Joe Biden enjoys more confidence globally compared to his predecessor, former President Donald Trump. The survey found that a median of 43% of respondents trust Biden to make the right decisions in world affairs, while only 28% expressed the same level of confidence in Trump.
Out of the 34 countries surveyed, Biden received more positive assessments than Trump in 24 nations. Trump led in Hungary and Tunisia, with the two men being closely tied in eight other countries.
Despite the higher confidence in Biden, the poll also highlighted a growing skepticism towards the U.S. democracy as a model for other nations to follow. While a median of 54% of respondents had positive views of the U.S., 4 in 10 individuals across the surveyed countries expressed doubts about the effectiveness of U.S. democracy as a global example.
According to Richard Wike, the director of global attitudes research at Pew, the perception of the U.S. political system is marred by deep partisan divisions, leading to a lack of faith in its functionality.
Although confidence in Biden's handling of world affairs has decreased since his first year in office, it remains significantly higher than that of Trump during his presidency. Biden received his lowest confidence ratings for his management of the Israel-Hamas conflict, with 57% of respondents expressing no confidence in his approach.
On the international stage, French President Emmanuel Macron garnered the highest level of confidence, closely followed by Biden, while Russian President Vladimir Putin received the lowest ratings.
While confidence in Biden has declined in various countries, it remains consistently higher than that in Trump. Trump's lowest ratings were in Europe and Latin America, with over 80% of adults in countries like France, Germany, and Sweden expressing no confidence in him.
Despite some countries, such as Africa, showing positive views of U.S. presidents, Trump's confidence levels were generally lower than Biden's across the board. Even in countries like Tunisia and Hungary, where Trump had slightly higher confidence ratings, the numbers were not significantly favorable towards him.
