Glentoran striker Paul O'Neill crowned Young Player of the Year

Newly crowned Young Player of the Year Paul O'Neill has set his sights on more silverware glory with Glentoran.

The 20-year-old striker capped off a brilliant season for the Glens by scoring in the Irish Cup final back in July.

O'Neill - who scored for Northern Ireland Under 21s last night - has become a pivotal figure in Mick McDermott's side, with his performances earning interest from clubs across the water.

Those displays have won him the NI Football Awards Dream Spanish Homes Young Player of the Year award, a personal accolade to add to the Irish Cup success the Glens recorded.

“It’s brilliant to get this award after the first full season when I’ve played regularly,” said O’Neill.

“I started most games and scored a few goals – especially in the Irish Cup final and I’ve over the moon to get the award.

“Trying to get across the water is still my main ambition. There was a bit of interest and if I can keep doing what I’m doing and scoring goals then hopefully it will come about for me.”

O'Neill is now relishing the start of the new Danske Bank Premiership season next Saturday, and believes a strengthened Glentoran can compete for more major honours.

“We’ve brought in a lot of new players, eight new signings and we will be pushing for the league," he added.

"We’ll at least be up there challenging with a big strong squad. We’ve two good players for every position and we’ll be going all out to challenge for the title.”
