NEW YORK — The cast of HBO Max’s upcoming animated series, “Velma,” was unveiled Thursday at the Javitz Center for New York Comic Con.
The project’s main star Mindy Kaling was on hand to share the news about the project centering on the brainy Scooby-Doo character.
Actors Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson and Constance Wu appeared on stage for the announcement about the adult animated series tracing the origin story of Velma Dinkley.
Howerton, of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” fame, will play Fred in the series. “Veep” actor Richardson will voice Shaggy, and “Crazy Rich Asians” star Wu will portray Daphne.
The star-packed voice cast also includes Wanda Sykes, Russell Peters, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Ken Leung among others.
Welker has voiced Fred in almost every animated iteration of the popular Hanna-Barbera cartoon since its inception in 1969. The 76-year-old voiceover legend has also provided Scooby’s voice in a number of productions.
“The Mindy Project” star, who serves as the executive producer of “Velma” with her longtime collaborator Charlie Grandy, previously showed a still from “Velma” at the TV upfronts, revealing the character is South Asian.
However, the titular character’s sexual orientation for this project remains to be seen.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Velma has a crush on another female character in the latest Scooby-Doo animated movie, “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!,” premiering on the Cartoon Network Oct. 14.
