Glenn Hoddle passes careful judgement on Chelsea's Champions League hopes this season

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Glenn Hoddle believes the pressure on Chelsea to deliver during this season's UEFA Champions League may weigh a little too heavy on the side's shoulders.

The Blues last claimed European success back in 2020/21, beating Manchester City thanks to Kai Havertz's goal in the all-English final.

Now, set to learn their group stage opponents later today, Hoddle believes the expectation cast upon the side may be slightly largely compared to their fellow London rivals.

''Chelsea have a great squad,'' began the 64-year-old, speaking at the UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Istanbul.

''They have got the experience, but the only thing with Chelsea is that the expectation of them is that they have got to try and win it, whether with Spurs if they got to the quarter-finals, they would be happy with that.''

Steve McManaman offered a different viewpoint, insisting it's not just Chelsea's recent success that stands them in good stead moving forward.

''I think all of the English teams have an excellent chance,'' added the former Liverpool midfielder. ''When you look across the whole of Europe, and you analyse some of the other opposition, have Liverpool, have Manchester City, have Chelsea and have Tottenham improved from last year.''
