Glencoe road to be closed for two weeks, Highland Council announces

A POPULAR road through one of Scotland’s most famous glens will be closed for two weeks, the Highland Council has announced.

The Old Glen Coe Road, which runs parallel to the A82 along the foot of the Pap of Glencoe, will be closed for roadworks from September 30 to October 11.

The Highland Council said that the closure would be in effect from 9am on the 30th till 4pm on the 11th. Travellers will instead be diverted along the A82.

Sharing an image of the closure site on social media, the local authority said: “Temporary road closure of U1504 Old Glencoe Road, #Glencoe.

“The closure is to allow for the safe replacement of culverts to be carried out.

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and thank the local community for their patience.”

The road is a popular tourist destination as it runs by the site where Hagrid’s Hut was set in the Harry Potter movies.

According to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) Glencoe website, some one million people visit the famous valley – known as the outdoor capital of the UK – every year.

It is also known as the site of the infamous Massacre of Glencoe of 1692, which saw dozens of MacDonalds killed by government forces for allegedly failing to swear allegiance to William of Orange.
