Glenburn Road Newtownards: Multiple cars destroyed in suspected arson

Police in Newtownards are investigating the suspected arson of up to 12 vehicles.

The incident took place in the Glenburn Road area of Newtownards in Co Down late on the night of Wednesday, March 1.

Several appliances from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene which was cordoned off by the PSNI.

The public were asked to avoid the area but the road has since reopened.

Sources said police would remain at the scene overnight ahead of forensic examinations in the morning.

Up to 12 vehicles are believed to have been torched intentionally.

As yet there have been no reports of injuries.

A PSNI spokesperson had said: "Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the Glenburn Road area of Newtownards, which is currently closed to traffic due to a report of a number of vehicles on fire at premises in the area.

"There are closures in place at both ends of the road.

"Police are currently in attendance together with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

"Please avoid the area if you can."
