Glen Johnson explains why Mohamed Salah could join Barcelona and names Liverpool replacement

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes there is a 'possibility' that Mohamed Salah could leave Anfield and join Barcelona.

The forward’s Liverpool future has been discussed at length in recent weeks with the 29-year-old yet to agree to a new deal with the club. When asked about the contract negotiations earlier this month, Jurgen Klopp said the Reds 'cannot do much more' except wait for Salah's final decision.

The former Chelsea man has been in fine form for Liverpool this season, scoring 28 times in 36 appearances in all competitions The ECHO understands that negotiations are ongoing between the club and representatives of Salah, who is in the final two years of his current deal that was signed in 2018.

The ECHO understands the Reds are keen to reward the Egyptian for his continued outstanding contribution since arriving from A.S. Roma for £43.9million in the summer of 2017. The Anfield club has extended the contracts of several players over the last year.

But due to him not putting pen-to-paper, Salah has been linked with a move to the Nou Camp in recent weeks. And Johnson believes that unless his old side get 'super lucky', it will be impossible for them to replace the frontman. While the former England international also believes a combination of five things means a move to Spain is a possibility.

“Well, he’s impossible to replace unless you get super lucky. He’s one of the best players in the world. Those players don’t come around often,” Johnson told Compare.bet.

“I think you’d have to get someone almost totally different, he’s one of the top players in the world. He scores goals for fun, and as we know those players are hard to find.”

“Yeah definitely, certainly for his age. He's won everything there is to win, he’s been super successful,” Johnson added when asked if Barcelona is an attractive destination for Salah.

“For the quality of life, a beautiful place to live, and to play for a major club… it could be a possibility.”

While Johnson has also urged his old club to make a move for Borussia Dortmund and and England star Jude Bellingham - comparing him to Anfield great Steven Gerrard in the process.

He said: “Replacement or not, if Jude Bellingham becomes available then yes I’d say get him for sure. He’s certainly going to be world class, looks the part and can do everything. If it’s a possibility, then you need to be looking at signing him.”

Before he continued on Bellingham, saying: “I’d probably say he’s like Gerrard. He’s physically bigger, but he gets around the park, can tackle and is good on the ball, and has that engine too. So I’d have to say Stevie.”
