Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has grabbed the attention of Glaswegians after declaring himself the ‘spirit’ of the city in a speech.
He made the statement during COP27 - the UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, which began today. Several people have taken to social media to express disagreement with the claim. In the speech he declared: “I am the spirit of Glasgow, that is what I am doing here.
“I am the spirit of Glasgow COP26 and it is incredible to think how much has changed since that last COP.”

Discovering the claims, many were quick to take to Twitter. One user wrote: “Standing on the podium lying. ‘I’m the spirit of Glasgow.’
“Eh? He showed up for a few hours, fell asleep next to the legend Sir David Attenborough and jetted off to a boys club evening. Nicola Sturgeon on the other hand did us proud in Glasgow.”
Another added: “Just heard Boris Johnson say ‘I’m the spirit of Glasgow’ and immediately threw up all over myself.”
In agreement, a third replied: “Same. Spirit of Glasgow my a**e.
“He was a bumbling mess last year as he always is. He doesn’t have an atom of any Scottish’ness, the people of Scotland reject him and his party.”
Lynsey Hamilton, Scottish Labour Councillor for Clydesdale West tweeted in response to Johnson’s claims: “I think I speak on behalf of the whole of Scotland when I say, naw yir no.”
The claims made at this years climate conference come one year after Glasgow hosted the event, at which the former PM made a blunder telling audiences the event was in Edinburgh.
Another tweet taking issue with his statement reads: “Boris Johnson says he’s the spirit of Glasgow, but once said that a pound spent in Strathclyde is better spent in Croydon.”
A tweet with a similar sentiment said: “Boris Johnson said at Cop27 speech this morning ‘I am the spirit of Glasgow’ - no Boris, you are the spirit of Westminster past, however he did urge them to keep their promises made at Cop26.”
