Glastonbury crowd start cheering as man gets down on one knee

A couple who got engaged at Glastonbury Festival said it was a moment they will never forget.

Tom Fairclough, met his fiancé Emma Volante on holiday in Los Angles in 2016. They are both from Liverpool and happened to meet by chance at a bar on Sunset Boulevard.

Tom said it was love at first sight and seven years later he built up the courage to get down on one knee and ask Emma to marry him. The 36-year-old said he chose the unusual location as it is one of Emma's "favorite places in the world".

Tom from Formby said: "I just saw four girls walking along and I thought they might be from Liverpool, then I heard them talking. Emma and I swapped numbers and we have been together ever since.

"I have been thinking about proposing for a while, we already have a baby together but covid got in the way. When we got Glastonbury tickets I decided to hold off until then. Emma has been so many times and always goes on about how much she loves it, so it was perfect timing."

The proposal took place on Wednesday, June 23 on the first day of the festival and Tom chose to pop the question at the top of Glastonbury Hill as the sun was going down. While she said yes, Tom said he caught Emma, 33, by surprise.

Tom told the ECHO: "I just kept seeing the hill getting busier and busier I thought the crowd was going to ruin my plans.

"I was a bit nervous beforehand and I think I caught her by surprise, when I got down on one knee she told me to stand up. She was overwhelmed and then everyone started clapping and cheering. The reaction from the crowd was great."

Emma, from West Derby, said: "It was a complete shock and I was speechless. Obviously, I said yes but it was just mad in the moment. It is something I will never forget, I don't think it is going to sink in until I get home."

Tom's mum died in 2011 and he used her wedding ring to propose to Emma. He said that while Emma and his mum never met he felt like this way, his mum was part of the special day.

Tom said: "Emma and I just bounce off each other and she is such a caring person." The couple said they will set a date once they have come back from the festival.
