A Glastonbury 2023 act asked the BBC to remove all footage of her performance from iPlayer after getting abuse online.
Billy Nomates, a 33-year-old musician and songwriter, performed on the festival’s Park Stage on Friday afternoon. Clips of the set were shown on BBC Radio 6’s social media channels where the artist said she suffered 'insane' abuse, reports The Mirror.
Billy complained to the BBC after seeing the comments online. Writing on a post on her Instagram story, before deleting her profile, Nomates said: “The level of personal abuse on @bbc6music socials for going to work today is insane.
“I’ve asked for all footage to be removed. I know it’s not for everyone what I do. I know lots of people don't rate me. But the level of personal abuse on the public page is too much.

“There will be no more shows after this summer. You wouldn’t stay in a workplace that did this to you. Why should I.” The radio station appears to have deleted the videos of the performer’s gig from their social media channels.
The Mirror reached out to the BBC for comment. Following on from their post the performer, whose real name is Tor Maries, was shown support from fellow musicians and fans.
Billy Bragg tweeted: “Solidarity from everyone at Left Field with Billy No Mates who was so badly abused online after her @glastonbury set was posted on @BBC6Music that she asked them to take the clip down. She played a set for us last year and was brilliant. You’ll always have place here Tor.”
Louder Than Words literary festival Twitter feed wrote: “Well, all here at Louder Towers are standing strong with Tor… the behaviour of some is just baffling…” Band Ash said: “Have yourself a listen to some #billyNoMates today and spread some love for Tor. She is a phenomenal artist.”
Mark Acton said “#billyNoMates is a great performer and songwriter who can command a stage by herself. She also seems like a thoroughly decent human being. I hope the love and support from people like @simonemarie4 and @jetfury drowns out the nonsense.”
Composer Ben Salisbury said: “Watch #billyNoMates on iPlayer. If you don’t see a brilliant live performance from one of the most talented songwriters around, then I can’t help you.” Radio DJ Edith Bowman added: “I adore @_billy_nomates a huge talent and stands out because she’s true to herself.. amazing Glasto set.. xx”
Mat Rayner said: “The beauty of music is that there’s something for everyone. I really enjoyed the Billy Nomates set yesterday & now others won’t get to see it due to the amount of online abuse Tor received. Keyboard warriors at their worst…”
Nodwell added: “#billyNoMates is the sort of talent our largely dreary and derivative music landscape needs. She stands out because she’s bold, brave and takes risks. Also - and this is key - her music is brilliant. Having a pop from your sofa cos you don’t understand means you are a ****.”
