Glasgow weather to cause disruption as Met Office issue two yellow weather warnings

The Met Office has issued another weather warning for the city with residents set to expect more rain and snow.

Areas across the city including the south side and city centre all saw a blanket of snow with a layer also landing in East Kilbride during the early hours of this morning. The snow continued to fall this morning with a yellow warning in place. While that alert ended at 11am, more are now in place.

The updated warning, which is set to come into force tomorrow, is for snow and rain only.

So what can locals expect? Here is what the Met Office have released:

When is Glasgow's yellow weather warning?

Today's warning for snow will be in place until 4pm today with it having come into force at 11.45am -just less than an hour after it's first one ended this morning.

From tomorrow (March 15) the Met Office has said Glasgow, and other parts of Scotland, will be under a yellow weather warning from 4pm until 4am on Thursday (March 16).

That weather warning is for snow only with the rain alert coming into force at midnight on Thursday and lasting until 3pm the same day.

Glasgow yellow weather warning - what to expect

The Met Office has said that spells of snow will likely cause disruption, mainly over higher transport routes, once the warning is in place tomorrow. However today's warning for wintery showers may cause travel disruption in some places, especially higher routes.

In addition to the snow, persistent rain is also looming which will be particularly heavy over southwest facing hills and is likely to cause some difficult travel conditions

Some roads and railways are due to be affected with longer journey times expected whether you are travelling by road, bus or train.

Why is there a yellow weather warning for Glasgow?

Today accumulations of one to two centimetres of snow is possible in some areas, mainly above 200m. In some places accumulations will only be temporary and melt away.

Discussing the warning for rain, the Met Office has said that during Wednesday evening, it is set to turn particularly heavy and persistent overnight especially over southwest facing hills. They add that "40-70 mm is likely quite widely, with the wettest spots possibly seeing in excess of 100 mm of rain. The rain will be coupled with generally windy conditions which is likely to further reduce visibility from spray. Conditions will slowly improve through Thursday afternoon."

The second warning for snow reads: "Spells of snow are expected to develop Wednesday late afternoon and early evening, mainly in areas above 100 to 200 m. Later on Wednesday evening and during Thursday early hours this snow will then turn to rain as milder weather conditions spread across the British Isles.

"Meanwhile, below 100 to 200 m, snow may fall briefly during the late afternoon and early evening before turning to rain. Snow accumulations will be mainly in areas above 200 to 300 m with several centimetres of snow falling in some places, especially in Scotland, and above 400 m more than 10 cm of snow is possible in places."
