Glasgow weather: Thunder, lightning and hail warning issued for city today

The weather in Glasgow last weekend was glorious with highs of at least 20C in some areas leaving many people to develop a tan, or in some cases sunburn.

But while many hope the hot spell would continue - particularly with Harry Styles coming to town to perform at Ibrox on Saturday - it seems unlikely, particularly today.

Forecasters have issued Glasgow with a yellow weather warning for today with lightning, hail and thunder all on its way.

This means that "heavy, slow moving showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop during Wednesday afternoon" with much of the heavy rain set to pour down between 3pm and 4pm.

The yellow weather warning is in force from 1pm today, lasting until 8pm with forecasters explaining: "Following the clearance of overnight rain, this area is likely to see the development of slow moving showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

"Although many places will miss the heaviest showers a few places could see in excess of 30mm of rain in a couple of hours, possibly accompanied by lightning and hail, which would be enough to cause difficult driving conditions and localised surface water flooding."

The Met Office has said locals can expect:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
