Glasgow water supplies restored as teams work for seven hours to fix 36-inch burst main

Water supplies across Glasgow are returning to normal after a major water mains burst in Milngavie.

Around 100,000 properties were impacted by the incident that led to localised flooding and road closures from around 3.45pm on Tuesday.

Scottish Water teams have now isolated the burst 36-inch strategic water main on Auchenhowie Road that has caused severe damage to the road which is set to remain closed until further notice.

Water supplies in the city centre, Kelvinside, Tradeston, Ibrox, Knightswood, Yoker, Scotstoun and Partick areas were all impacted.

Supplies to 56,000 properties were restored in Knightswood, Yoker, Scotstoun and Partick around 9.30pm with teams hoping to have all supplies restored by 10pm.

As of 10.30pm, some postcodes have reported that their water supply is yet to return.

Customers have been warned that low/intermittent water pressure might continue whilst the network recovers. Once supplies have fully restored, some customers may also experience discoloured water, Scottish Water has said.

They added: "If your water is brown discoloured, please be assured that this is the natural lying sediment within the mains that has been disturbed and we advise to allow your cold water kitchen tap to run at reduced pressure until this runs clear. Whilst doing so, please do not run any other taps or water appliances until this is clear from your cold water kitchen tap. Please follow this process for any other taps affected.

"If you experience white water, this is air in the water supply following the interruption and this will settle within 24/48hrs."

East Dunbartonshire Council has advised locals to avoid the area until the road is reopened.

A spokesperson said: "Glasgow Road, Milngavie, remains closed between Burnbrae Roundabout & the area around the junction with Auchenhowie Rd due to a major issue caused by a burst water main. Auchenhowie Rd remains closed between its junction with Glasgow Road, Milngavie, & Allander Toll Roundabout.

"Police Scotland are advising motorists to avoid the area, with closures in place until otherwise advised. Diversion routes will use the A81 Milngavie Road, Kessington Road, Rannoch Drive, the open section of Boclair Road and Allander Toll Roundabout.

"Please note, there is currently no through-road from Boclair Rd to Milngavie Rd due to ongoing SGN works. High-sided vehicles are advised to use the A81 Milngavie Rd/Maryhill Rd/Garscube Rd and travel via Glasgow."
