Gas canister explodes at St Enoch's Christmas market as emergency crews race to scene

Cops have locked down the Christmas Market at St Enoch Square in Glasgow after it was rocked by an explosion.

Officers were alerted to reports of a gas canister explosion this morning, Monday December 5, at around 11am. Emergency crews remain at the scene while officers work to establish the full circumstances.

It is understood nearby streets have also been cordoned off the public. Two people were passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Their conditions are not known at this time.

A statement from Police Scotland on Monday afternoon said: "We were made aware of an explosion involving a gas canister at a food stall in St Enoch Square in Glasgow around 11am on Monday, 5 December.

Emergency services are currently at the scene and the area has been closed off while work is ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

A woman who works at one of the stalls next to where the incident took place, where the cordon is now erected, said the market is operating as normal.

The worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I wasn’t here at the time of the explosion, I was down at George Square but a man turned to me and asked if I knew what was happening. That’s when I started walking up.

“By the time I arrived, police had set up their cordon.

“I was told that it was two women that were taken to hospital but that they just had scratches and marks on their hands. I don’t think they had any serious injuries. I think they worked at Chinese Noodles bar.

“The atmosphere is fine, people are just disappointed that they can’t go past the cordoned off area. We’ve had no word as to when the area might reopen.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called to assist emergency service partners around 11am on Monday, 5 December to reports of a gas explosion within the Christmas Market at St Enoch Square, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene. "Two casualties were handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service."
