Glasgow southsider 'shocked' after finding giant exotic spider on busy road

We've seen some sights roaming the streets of Glasgow on a Saturday night but none more skin-crawling than that spotted on Victoria Road this weekend.

An unlucky member of the public passed a giant spider that had somehow made its way onto the busy street. The creepy-crawly was caught on video appearing to be struggling to move and looking like it could be missing a couple of legs.

The passerby, who at first glance thought it could be a crab, said it was definitely of the arachnid variety.

Alex McLeod, 26, from the south side said: "We were walking to the pub when I spotted it from the corner of my eye and had to do a double take.

"It's not what you want to see after a couple of Aperols. At first, I thought it was a crab but a few other passersby agreed that it was definitely a spider.

"We think it was probably dead but it did seem to be moving a little bit but that could have just been the wind."

The Scottish SPCA was unable to confirm what species of spider it is but urged anyone who comes across a spider that they believe to be an escaped pet or exotic species, they should contact their helpline.

Scottish SPCA chief superintendent, Mike Flynn, said, “If anyone comes across a spider that they are concerned is an escaped pet or an exotic species they should call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
