Glasgow set for Lush flagship store at old Borders building

Lush has announced it will open a new flagship store in Glasgow city centre.

The cosmetics retailer, best known for its scented bath bombs, is launching a new shop on Buchanan Street where Borders then All Saints used to be. Lush already has a store at 78 Buchanan Street, which opened in 2014, but has announced plans to invest £7.6m this year on new shops, relocations and redesigns across the UK, Ireland and Europe.

A 15-year lease at 98 Buchanan Street, at a rent of £900,000 per annum, has been agreed as reported by insider.co.uk. There's a basement, ground and three upper floors, totalling approximately 20,000 square feet, with Lush planning to open its doors next year.

Paul Wheatley, Lush's global property director, hopes the opening will help Buchanan Street become more of a 'community hub'.

He said: “Since the opening of our first shop in 1995 in Poole, customers have constantly been at the forefront of everything we do – from product invention to customer service. Physical retail has always been important to us, as it enables us to provide our customers with exceptional service.

“Our shops are a space for the local community to get together, our retailers and shop colleagues are involved in their local communities and we believe that high streets have the opportunity to become community hubs. Our goal is to keep things exciting for the customer with a flexible dynamic of retail and digital - but being experiential is not enough, you have to be inspirational.”

The neo-classical building is the former home to the iconic Borders book store which closed down in late 2009 along with 44 other stores. Originally designed by Archibald Elliot in 1827 for the Royal Bank, Borders occupied a prime spot on Royal Exchange Square, and had something for everyone.

Over its years of operation, it played host to hundreds of celebs as they visited the city to sign copies of their new books or autobiographies.
