Glasgow school memories from warm milk and wallpapered jotters to banned Tamagotchis

Think back to your childhood and the time you spent at school - we know, but bare with us. From school assemblies and singing classic such as He's Got The Whole World in His Hands, there's a lot of experiences we have in common.

While there were some memories of school we may want to forget - like having to pick a partner for country dancing - there were also some great times to be had and looking back it was pretty fun.

Whether it was that game you always played with your mates or the moment your report cards were sent out, there's a lot to look back on. And that's what our Glasgow Live readers have done - and there's some golden ones among them.

Ready for some serious blasts from the past? Here you go...

Wrapping your jotters in wallpaper

No seriously though...why did we do this? What did it add? We are still confused about this? And more to the point, do school kids nowadays still do this. Let us know please.

One Glasgow Live reader said: "My mum used to wrap my jotters in padded wallpaper. They were bombproof."

Warm milk

A memory we'd rather not remember. (Getty 2023)

One reader said: "Tiny bottles of warm milk" followed by a sick emoji and we cannot blame them for using this.

Enough said. Do we really need to expand on this point?

And talking about being fed whilst at school, a few readers remembered what they ate with one saying: "Chocolate donuts in the school cafeteria" whilst another recalled: "Old school cake."

Classic sweets - that didn't cost a fortune

Telling Irn Bru it "needs to bring back those bars and take all of my money", one reader recalled the retro orange bars.

And speaking of, let's not forget the 10p Freddos and chocolate cigarettes.

Wooden frames in P.E

More memories and this time, it's all about getting fit and active. We all remember when the wooden climbing frames would be brought out, right?

That's when you knew it was going to be a good class.

One reader said: "The apparatus in the school gym was maybe out once or twice in a lifetime."

Cycling Proficiency

If you're of a certain age, you'll remember the Cycling Proficiency test you did at school and may have flashbacks to trying to signal and turn all whilst staying upright.

And hey, you might still have the signed certificate telling you that you can cycle safety.

These no longer exist and was superseded in 2005 by the National Standards for Cycle Training, branded Bikeability.

Tamagotchis

In some Glasgow schools, these were so popular that they were banned leaving many unhappy pets at home and the owner (us) coming home to a dead Tamagotchi - again.

The handheld egg-shaped digital pet was created in Japan and released in 1996 before becoming of the biggest toy fads of the late 1990s and the early 2000s.
