Glasgow sausage factory site to be turned into hundreds of flats under new plans

Hundreds of new homes could be built in place of the former factory in the east end.

An application has been submitted to create 224 flats and townhouses at the old McKellar Watt sausage factory on Old Shettleston Road.

The building, dating back to 1961, was created as an expansion of the McKellar Watt Limited company. The business eventually occupied 7.5 acres by the time Eric McKellar Watt retired in 1985.

The sausages were renowned across the UK and exported around the world, with the factory consistently employing hundreds of people until its eventual closure in 2012.

Developers say that following the demolition of the factory there is nothing to recognise McKellar Watt’s achievements and the company’s contribution to the wider community.

They're proposing that a small park area is created in the development named after Mr Watt to "recognise the strong history". Motifs have been considered that could be used in the public areas of the new buildings, at entrances and common areas, that recognise the history of the site and provide local contextual references, firmly rooting the buildings in the place.

However, the application says "sausages are not an appropriate motif' but an abstract representation of the animal ingredients of the sausages might be used instead.

The four-storey building, which would be a mixture of one, two, three, and four-bedroom properties, will be created as a 'landmark reference for the areas'. It would also feature shops or eateries on the ground floor.

The plans are due to go before Glasgow City Council.
