Glasgow's Scran announces new east end location as award-winning cafe to reopen in November

Glasgow's food scene is up there with some of the best (if we do say so ourselves) and each month we seem to be adding a new eatery to our 'must visit' list.

However, one place that has been open for a number of years is finally making a comeback after they had to temporarily close their cafe doors at the start of this month.

Scran, formerly located on Alexandra Parade in Dennistoun, will soon be opening their doors again - and it seems we won't have long to wait with owner and chef, Chris Mears, sharing the new east end location and what's to come for the award-winning cafe.

Chatting exclusively with Glasgow Live , Chris revealed: "We're absolutely buzzing to announce that the new Scran will be opening at 239 London Road at the back of the Barras - two doors up from Smokey Trotters.

"After reluctantly closing our doors on the Parade, we feel that this spot is absolutely perfect for the SCRAN brand. Believe it or not, I looked at a place here before we opened in Dennistoun four years ago, but we feel the timing is perfect as there's a real electricity in the Barras right now. I definitely wouldn't call it gentrification, it just feels as though the sometimes forgotten institution of the Barras has been given a new lease of life by old and new traders alike - think I've still got some dodgy pirated floppy discs from the 90s!"

As for when you can walk through their doors again, he continued: "We're aiming to open in the first half of November all going to plan. So we look forward to welcoming SCRAN fans of old and can't wait to meet some new faces."

With the same personal touches and high standards fans have been accustomed to over the last four years since their opening in 2018, Chris said that there are a few changes to come - including a new menu.

He teased: "As for Scran, don't worry we're not changing our formula...much. You'll still get all the love and attention you're used to. The menu may be a wee bit more streamlined, but along with your favourites, there's a few new SCRAN ORIGINALS for the menu."

Hoping to add to the "thriving food scene" the chef added: "Food obviously goes hand in hand with hungry shoppers. For example a couple of good friends of mine Robert aka 'big smokey' from Smokey Trotters opened through lockdown and is absolutely smashing it with the best burgers in the country.

"Big Colin from Monster Munchies with fine bao buns (that Irn Bru chicken - chef's kiss) is nailing it in the heart of the market. Hutch, the team behind the amazing bar The Gate, is keeping it real with quality filled rolls, soups and bakes and Us v Them is still my favourite coffee in town just round the corner.

"So we hope that we can add to this already thriving food scene and are welcomed into this amazing community.

"Aye the Barras are better!"

The much-loved eatery, know for their saying 'It's Only Eggs', is one of Glasgow's favourites having not only been listed as Travellers Choice 2022, as well as holding the number one spot for cafes in Glasgow by Tripadvisor, but they also won Scotland's Cafe of the Year at the Food Awards Scotland 2021 - to name a few.

In addition, they are to date, Glasgow Live's only double winner at our Best Places Awards triumphing in the best coffee and best restaurant in the east categories.

You can now find Scran located at 239 London Road, Glasgow G40 1PE.
