Glasgow's HoLeeFook is a delicious addition to the Barra's growing food scene

The east end of Glasgow doesn't get enough credit when it comes to food and drinks with many people hopping to the west end or south side.

But one place that is often overlooked is the Barras with it being home to hundreds of local vendors and small businesses who on a weekly basis, create some seriously mouth-watering food.

One of the latest additions to the Barras is the cleverly named HoLeeFook - read all about their name here - with the husband and wife run eatery already so popular you'll have to be prepared to wait. But thankfully not for too long, with the team working hard to get all the orders out.

So not passing up the opportunity to try it out, whilst in the Barras of a weekend - and when it wasn't raining - we ventured down to the new Asian Street food spot, and we were not left disappointed.

What did we get from Glasgow's HoLeeFook?

Tonkatsu Sando. (Sophie Buchan/Glasgow Live)

Eyeing up their Tonkatsu Sando, we decided to treat ourselves to this. On their menu it says: "Brined. Braised Breaded. Japanese Panko Breaded Pork Belly Sando. Smothered in Kewpie Mayo with Tonkatsu Sauce and cabbage."

For those unaware, Kewpie mayo is made from egg yolks and not whole eggs. It is said to have a richer and velvety texture when compared to regular store-bought mayo.

As for the Tonkatsu sauce, it is is said to consists of vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, prunes, dates, apples, lemon juice, carrots, onions, and celery. It also includes more than 10 kinds of spices along with soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar.

What did we think of it?

The Sando was the perfect lunch option with it being light enough that it won't leave you feeling like you've scoffed a buffet, but enough that it will leave you feeling satisfied.

The bread was soft as was the pork with it pulling apart nicely. And most importantly, it wasn't dry. The sauce and cabbage added another dimension to the Sando with each bite full of flavour.

The food item costs £8.50 which we think was well priced. And with it being just opposite the Barrowlands around the corner from the Barras Market, it's a perfect spots to pick up some pre-gig food or to take away as you explore what Glasgow's locals have to offer from homewear, arts and prints, vintage clothing, vinyl and loads more.
