Glasgow's 'famous Still Game' shop gets go-ahead to sell alcohol

One of Glasgow’s best-known shops — ‘Harrid’s Convenience Store’ in ‘Still Game’ — has secured permission to sell alcohol.

The new operators of Townhead Convenience Store, which starred in the BBC sitcom, were granted an off-sales licence by the city’s licensing board today.

Brian McMahon, representing the operators, told the board how his client’s premises was “potentially the most famous shop in Scotland.”

“If I was to tell you the name of the manager or the customers, you would know the shop immediately,” he said.

“Navid is the manager and Jack and Victor were the customers.”

He said the shop is “fairly large” but would sell a “modest amount of alcohol”.

The shop, previously known as ‘Alfy’s Paper Shope’, has been trading under the current operators since late last year.

Mr McMahon said they are a husband and wife from Iran who have “got a background in retail” and want to sell spirits, wine and beer from the store.
