Glasgow's 10 most potholed streets as Great Western Road tops list of shame

Glasgow City Council has released a list of last year's most potholed streets with a road in the west end road coming out on top.

New figures released to Glasgow Live show a total of 15,517 potholes reported to the council in 2022, with Great Western Road the worst with 378 reports. Nitshill Road was second on the list with 276 and Shields Road rounded out the top three with 154.

The council revealed that 5,521 temporary fixes to potholes were carried out in 2022, however, they did not reveal how many permanent fixes were carried out.

From April 2021 to January 2023 the local authority spent £1,669,948 on repairing the dreaded holes blighting the city's streets.

We have spoken to many people over the last few months regarding the impact potholes have been having on Glasgow drivers.

One man told us that he nearly counted 20 potholes on Cumbernauld Road while another was left fuming after a pothole on Garscube Road left her with a burst tyre in January.

The motorist said at the time: "I've been cautious and missing them all whilst I've been driving around here, that one on Saturday night I just totally missed it.

"Now I'm too busy looking down at the road rather than actually driving. I'm focussed on swerving out of the way of potholes rather than purely driving which is really dangerous.

"I'm sure a lot of other people are the same."

Here are the the 10 Glasgow roads that received the most pothole reports in 2022:

The information released after we submitted a Freedom of Information request, show that in January this year the council has received 7,356 reports alone, nearly half of all theose reported in 2022.

A spokesman for the council has previously told Glasgow Live: “Potholes can appear suddenly at any time and will be caused by factors such as heavy rain or flooding, ice, snow and the impact of traffic on the road surface.

“Winter is always a challenging time for road conditions due to the effects of the weather.

“During December Glasgow experienced its lowest road surface temperatures in 12 years, followed by long periods of rainfall, which is a damaging combination for road surfaces.

“Our responsibility is to ensure we have in place an appropriate system of road safety inspections and repairs that tackles the most dangerous faults as a matter of priority.

“We always seek to undertake first time permanent repairs wherever possible, but modern materials can provide an immediate and durable solution when necessary.

“The roads network is inspected on an on-going basis but we urge people to report any road faults to us directly so they can be properly assessed and included in an appropriate repair programme.

“We are currently deploying additional resources to deal with the impact of this winter’s weather on the roads network and have staff working round the clock to undertake repairs.

“All claims are determined on the individual merits of each and in the context of our road safety inspection and repairs policy, which is based upon national guidance.”
