Glasgow residents told to expect loud sirens amid 'routine' alert system tests

RESIDENTS in the East End of Scotland's largest city may hear a loud siren next week.

Gas company SGN will be conducting a routine test of its warning siren at its Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) site in Blochairn Road, Provan, on Thursday, April 20.

The siren is used to warn workers and people living nearby of any potential incidents.

The warning siren test will be carried out from 10am next Thursday and will last around an hour.

During the test, both the "warning" and "all clear" sirens will sound several times.

The gas company carries out these tests at all of its LNG sites every six months and will issue a letter notifying residents and businesses beforehand.

The test is required as part of the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations 2015.

SGN spokesperson Dan Brown said: “We carry out these tests every six months because the safety of the Provan community is really important to us.

"While the test scheduled at 10am on Thursday, April 20, is routine and nothing to be concerned about, it’s important nearby residents and businesses are familiar with the sound of the siren and know what they need to do in case a real incident ever takes place.

"You can find more essential information and guidance on our website at sgn.co.uk.”
