Glasgow resident fears 'gangland crossfire' after young dad murdered and cars torched in Springburn

Residents in the north of Glasgow are living in fear that they could be "caught in the crossfire", it's been claimed.

It comes mere days after a young dad was brutally murdered in Auchinloch Street in Springburn, while several cars have also been set alight in surrounding streets.

Thomas Bowers, 33, was pronounced dead at around 5.25am on Friday, April 14, writes the Record.

Police have also launched an investigation into the attempted murder of a 52-year-old man who was found seriously injured at the scene where Thomas died.

On the same day of the murder, at around 6.10am , a white Vauxhall Astra was discovered on fire in nearby Gadie. The vehicle fire is being treated by wilful.

A local has now said another car was deliberately torched around two miles away on Barclay Street on April 12, two days prior to Thomas' murder.

The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "It's been pretty bad for gangland activity in the area. Last week there was the car that was ditched and then torched at the end of our street.

The SFRS attended around 11.01pm and put the blaze out in around 20 minutes (supplied)

"Then there was the guy murdered up the road in Auchinloch Street just two days later.

"These gangland guys tend to attack each other, but they don't always get the right guy. They shot and killed the wrong guy in Milton a couple of years back. There's always a worry that you could be caught in the crossfire.

"I've lived around here for over 50 years, but people don't feel safe anymore."

Having witnessed the car fire on April 12, the man added: "I heard it happening. I looked out the window after I heard a pop. By then the car was totally ablaze.

"There were at least two people, possibly three. A cop came to my door the next morning and asked me what I had seen or heard.

"I have been told through the grapevine it was gang-related."

Thomas Bowyers has been described as a "lovely wee guy" by friends and family after his body was discovered on Friday.

Detective Chief Inspector Lynsey Watters of Police Scotland said: “Our thoughts are with Mr Bowers' family and we are providing them with support at this very difficult time. Our investigation into his murder and the attempted murder of the second man is ongoing and I would urge anyone who can help to get in touch as soon as you can.

“We would be keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard any activity in the area or who may have dashcam or private CCTV footage. We would also be keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the white Vauxhall Astra or may have information about its movements before it was found on fire."

On the separate car fire incident, a spokesperson added: “Around 11.10pm on Wednesday April 12 police were called to reports of vehicle on fire in Barclay Street, Glasgow.

"Scottish Fire & Rescue Service were also in attendance. The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing."
