Glasgow reacts to Barack Obama COP26 speech as he references 'weak coffee and bad food'

Twitter users have reacted after Barack Obama referenced the "weak coffee and bad food" during his COP26 speech today.

Social media users appeared offended that the former US President had slammed the city's food and coffee scene, when in fact, he was only meaning the food and beverages on offer at COP26.

Barack Obama was making a keynote speech at the Climate Change Summit which started at 2pm today where he addressed the challenges ahead to tackle the climate crisis.

The 44th president of the United States said: "We come now here to Glasgow and just was as true with the Paris agreement, there is good news and bad news about what has happened here this past week.

"The good news, in large part, is because of the efforts of the people in this room.

"The hours of work you have spent.... with weak coffee and bad food, feeling sleepy.

"Because of you countries are recognising around the world are recognising this is a decisive decade to avoid a climate disaster and are setting some important goals for 2030."

Social media users were quick to hit back at the former presidents comments appearing to mistaken them for Scotland as a whole.

One Twitter user, @FictionFan2 took particular issue with Obama's comments writing: " Hey, Obama, Scotland may have forced you to put up with weak coffee and bad food for a couple of days, but the US is pumping more filth into the air per capita than any other nation. Just saying'..."

Another, @audreytrp agreed with Obama saying: "Former US president Barack Obama, in highlighting how COP26 provided a glimmer of hope in dealing with the climate crisis, thanked negotiators for their efforts, and for putting in work with "weak coffee and bad food" ... which I can attest to, the coffee is terrible".

@stevjo9 said: " Barack Obama just said his fellow elitists in Glasgow Scotland had to put up with weak coffee and bad food at COP26."

@FictionFan2 added : "He was President for eight years, and the US is still the biggest polluter per capita in the world. Maybe we gave him weak coffee deliberately."

@tancopsey commented: "I don't always agree with Obama. But his position on getting rid of weak coffee by COP27 is one I strongly endorse."

During his speech speech Obama made remarks at his disappointment at the urgency in which climate disasters were being met with.

Mr Obama said: " I have to confess it was particularly discouraging to see the leaders of the worlds two largest emitters, China and Russia decline to even attend the proceedings.

International plans reveal so far what appears to be a dangerous lack of urgency, a willingness to maintain the status quo on the part of those governments and that's a shame."

Mr Obama is expected to stay in the Edinburgh Caledonian hotel in the West End for the duration of his stay during the COP26 conference.
