Glasgow pubs and clubs to stay open for extra hour for Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Glasgow's pubs and clubs have been granted permission to stay open for an extra hour this coming week as the nation celebrates the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Cities across the UK are hosting events and activities - from pop concerts to street parties - across the Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend of June 2 - 5, with London being the main focus of the celebrations.

However, no major events have been planned by Glasgow City Council - a decision which one Glasgow Tory councillor labelled "shameful".

Despite that, the council have confirmed to Glasgow Live that all licensed premises in the city - with the exception of casinos - are being given automatic permission to extend their hours.

The general extension of one additional licensed hour beyond the terminal hour 'to all licensed premises with an on-sales facility' applies on the following dates:

  • The evening of Thursday 2 June into the early hours of Friday 3 June 2022; and
  • The evening of Friday 3 June into the early hours of Saturday 4 June 2022

That being the case, the council have also confirmed to Glasgow Live that there are no plans in place to relax the Glasgow byelaw which prohibits drinking alcohol in public places.

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: “There are no plans to relax the byelaw which prohibits the drinking of alcohol in public places.”

According to the Local Government Association, more than 16,000 street parties are expected to be thrown over the bank holiday weekend in towns and cities across England to celebrates the monarch’s 70-year milestone.
