Glasgow printer helps staff through winter fuel crisis

McAllister Litho Glasgow (MLG) is set to help staff meet rocketing fuel bills this winter with a financial package worth £3,500 over the next seven months.

Brian McAllister, director at the Glasgow-based commercial printing business, explained: “Every member of staff will receive £500 a month, then at that point we will review it and see what if any assistance the government is offering and possibly continue with more help if needed.”

The company weathered Covid lockdowns using furlough and made changes to its sales operation and shift patterns to be back in full production in October 2020.

By this summer volumes had increased, according to McAllister.

“We had an unusually busy summer period and most people in the factory have done extra shifts, so this is also a bit of a thank you for their support.”

That growth may have been the result of changes in the sales approach, sparked by lockdown.

“Selling has completely changed, there is no need for the traditional milk round and we have transferred some accounts to the CSR team - our turnover is around the same, but we are making more profit,” McAllister stated.

The company has also been proactive with the recent paper shortages; ordering and buying ahead which has helped win jobs.

McAllister made the announcement to staff last week. “Most people are under pressure at the moment, so they will get the initial payment this month; they were relieved and very thankful.”

Based beside the SEC in Glasgow, MLG specialises in litho, digital and large format printing.

Almost 10 years ago, the company - previously Montgomery Litho - was bought out of provisional liquidation, saving 76 jobs.

All 148 employees had been laid off and the company's Haddington plant was closed.

The newly-formed company was led by Montgomery Litho's former production director Janette McAllister.
