Glasgow plans unveiled for huge £200m 'frigate factory' at BAE Systems' Govan yard

Plans have been unveiled for a huge £200m 'frigate factory' at BAE Systems' Govan yard on the River Clyde.

The proposed ship building assembly hall will be 81 metres wide, 170 metres long and 49 metres high, enclosing 675,000 cubic metres of usable space.

BAE Systems submitted a proposal of notice to Glasgow City Council in May, signalling their intent to submit an application for planning permission.

The defence contractor say they "must" configure and upgrade its existing ship building capability in Govan, in order to meet the UK's future shipbuilding requirement.

The assembly hall will allow for ships longer than 75 metres to be constructed under cover at Govan, as well as at least two ships to be built simultaneously under cover and in single hull format.

A spokesperson said: "The opportunity to provide a new modern ship building hall of this nature would allow BAE Systems to adopt improved shipbuilding techniques together with improved construction access and state of the art, dedicated, on-site office and amenities accommodation.

"It would also significantly improve ship building capability in Govan, which in turn will safeguard employment for the ship building and affiliated trades in the Glasgow city region and secure continued investment in training and education, in innovative technologies and in BAE Systems’ supply chain."

BAE Systems are inviting the local community to provide feedback on the proposals via a consultation setting out the background to the proposals, identifying their vision for the site and how the emerging proposals have been developed.

Subject to the consultation exercise and further discussions with Glasgow City Council and other stakeholders, BAE Systems say they propose to submit a planning application in the summer.
