Glasgow Mortons Rolls staff at risk of redundancy offered help at free employment event

Staff at Mortons Rolls who are at risk of redundancy are being offered support at a free event.

The beloved Glasgow firm ceased trading after entering administration last week, putting 250 jobs at risk and threatening to close the Drumchapel factory for good.

Despite hints that the company could be saved, there is still little clarity for staff who now face losing their jobs.

The event aiming to help those at risk will take place at Partick Jobcentre on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 March from 10.30am to 12.30pm. It will offer advice on a range of topics from different Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE) partner organisations and the opportunity to meet with potential employers.

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) will lead on the delivery of PACE support in conjunction with a number of key partners including the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and local authorities amongst others.

Business Minister Ivan McKee said: “The employees affected by any business ceasing trading are the immediate priority.

“The Scottish Government’s initiative for responding to redundancy situations, Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE), has arranged these two events to provide support for the affected employees.

“Through providing skills development and employability support, PACE aims to minimise the time people affected by redundancy are out of work. PACE support is also available online and through the PACE Helpline.

“I would strongly encourage those who are able to attend one of these events.”

Mark Leitch, Team Leader with SDS in Glasgow and local PACE Chair said: “This event will offer useful advice and information on a variety of topics for Mortons Rolls staff.

“This includes advice on money, pensions and benefits as well as job hunting, writing CVs and interview techniques.

“The event also offers the chance to meet local employers, and anyone affected by the closure can drop in and see what is available.”

The event is free to attend.
