Glasgow misses out on hosting Eurovision 2023 as Liverpool wins bidding war

Fans of Eurovision in Glasgow will be left feeling disappointed with the news that Liverpool has won the host city bid.

The news was announced on BBC's The One Show on Friday night, as presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp gave the microphone to Graham Norton to make the long-awaited announcement. Eurovision fans were stationed in both Glasgow and Liverpool, to gauge live reaction from both crowds.

As Graham revealed the news we've all been waiting for for weeks, the Glaswegian fans were left feeling less than impressed as the city of Liverpool was announced as the hosts for Eurovision 2023. Social media was ablaze with upset and frustration at the news that Glasgow would not be hosting Eurovision next year.

One Twitter user wrote: "Glasgow not getting the #Eurovision."

Another said: "I’d prepared a tweet pretending to be shocked because I expected it would be Glasgow! Truly cannot believe it! #Eurovision."

And a third wrote: "And the place hosting #Eurovision next year is......Liverpool! sorry Glasgow."

More comments excitedly read: "Ach weel. Still pleased it's in the UK this year. Good luck Liverpool - a city with a stellar musical pedigree you'll be braw. Do #Ukraine proud. Slava Ukraini #Eurovision2023 #Eurovision."

And others exclaimed: "fix fix #Eurovision."

While more said: "Set up #Eurovision."

And finally, one concluded: "Waaaa? I wasn't expecting that!!! #Eurovision."

Liverpool will host the Eurovision Song Contest despite the UK coming second in 2021 to Ukraine. This is due to the ongoing unrest in Ukraine, caused by the invasion of Russia.

It is yet to be announced which Liverpool venue will host Eurovision, but it will take place in May 2023. More details will be announced in due course, so stay tuned for any new updates.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council, said: “Naturally, we are disappointed not to have been selected, but we are very proud to have made it to the final two cities and we wish Liverpool every success as they prepare to host Eurovision 2023. Glasgow remains a firm supporter of Ukraine and we look forward to watching Liverpool deliver a celebration of Ukrainian culture.”

Culture Minister Neil Gray said: “Although we are disappointed Glasgow’s bid to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest was not successful, we wish Liverpool well with hosting next year’s event on behalf of Ukraine. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Glasgow City Council for all their work on this bid.”

“Scotland continues to stand with the rest of the UK, Europe and the world, in condemnation of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Since the conflict began, more than 20,000 people with a Scottish sponsor has arrived, representing 20% of all UK arrivals - the most per head of any of the four nations.”
