Glasgow locals reflect on day Princess Diana died 25 years on

On this day 25 years ago, the world watched in horror as Princess Diana was rushed to the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital after a high speed crash in Paris.

After operating for two hours, doctors declared the Princess of Wales had died at the age of 36. It’s a moment that is ingrained in the minds of those who remember it, and a story that’s been told many times over for those who don't.

Here in Glasgow, it's no different, locals had much respect for the People's Princess, who had shone on past visits to the city over the years.

In the week following her death, George Square became a shrine to Diana, as locals began to lay a sea of floral tributes.

By September 14, 1997, the tributes were moved to the Garden of Remembrance at Daldowie Crematorium, displayed at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, and other spots across the city.

The feeling across Glasgow is remembered to this day, and each resident of the city has their own set of memories surrounding those dark weeks. On the anniversary of her death, many will be reliving the moment they found out - and several can recall exactly where they were, and what they were doing.

We asked members of the Glasgow Back in Time Facebook group what they recall, from the shocking day 25 years ago.

Lynda Jones remembered: “I was sitting with my dad watching all the news reports and feeling so sad. Diana was the perfect princess, gorgeous looking lady with a beautiful heart.

“Her death was devastating to many people.”

Betty McDonald had similar memories: “Early in the morning, I was sitting having my tea when my kids came running down the stairs and they said ‘Did you hear the news about Princess Diana?’ - I couldn’t believe it. Taken away far too soon.”

Agnes McCrae commented: "Our relatives were here from Australia. We couldn't believe it when the news flashed up."

Tee Caddy recalled discovering the Princess’ death: “I had been on a night out, picking up newspapers on my way home and seen it but she was already dead.

“Papers had been printed though, and just said she was in an accident. So sad.”

Sue Forsyth agreed: "We used to have a radio on low volume on at work overnight. That morning, I think the news presenter said at first she had fractures then later on at around 5am they announced she had died."

Maryann Gallagher looked back on Glasgow’s reaction. She commented: “All those flowers laid out for the People’s Princess. I actually cried, it was so sad.”

The Daily Record posted a memorial video for Princess Diana, which had Facebook users recalling memories of her death. One user remembered: "I was on duty at Sky tv in the Dunfermline call centre when it was announced.

"The atmosphere in the building you could not describe. The most wonderful and beautiful lady ever, my thoughts about you I will never forget."

John McLean agreed: "She showed compassion for everyone. The world cried at her untimely death."

Lynn Maley had similar feelings. She said: "One special lady, there will never be another like her. Beautiful princess."

One of Diana’s most memorable visits to Glasgow came in 1983, when she stopped off at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and spoke with the people of Maryhill. When she returned in 1987, her smiling face was on the cover of every newspaper front page.

The Princess of Wales met with young addicts at the Possil Drugs Project, and listened sympathetically to stories of overdose, addiction and lives of crime. She had won the hearts of the city, and when her death came 10 years later, those hearts were broken here in Glasgow.
