Glasgow Life and Chamber of Commerce create business hub during cycling championships

Glasgow Life and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce have partnered to create Glasgow House, a business hub and event space which will operate in tandem with the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in August.

With an estimated one million spectators expected to attend an event, along with elite and amateur athletes from more than 120 countries and more than 400 media representatives, Glasgow House aims to give local firms an opportunity to showcase their business to government ministers, business leaders and academics, as well as international delegations.

Based at The Merchants House on George Square, it will deliver a programme of engagement opportunities, from business breakfast talks to networking, themed seminars and evening receptions.

Featured themed days include subjects like the built environment, life sciences, transport, diversity and net zero, promoting circularity, digital connectivity, eco-systems development, skills, neurodiversity within the city.

The initiative involves teaming up with Invest Glasgow and the Glasgow City Council’s economic development team to provide a programme that encourages investment.

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “Glasgow has such a rich and innovative business community and events like these are an excellent opportunity to show international dignitaries, business leaders and investors how the city is leading the way on issues such as green technologies, financial services, and life sciences.”

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said: “Mega events like this are critical to our economy and over the last decade Glasgow has cemented its reputation as a world-class host for global events.

“It is estimated that the championships will add £67m to our economy and, much like during the Commonwealth Games and European Championships, businesses play a key role in ensuring that not only the event itself is successful, but that we create a lasting legacy from it.

“Having Glasgow House established for the 10 days during the championships is excellent news for business looking to build this legacy and promote their work and services to the world.

“We know business leaders from across the globe will be in our city and having coordinated events like this provides a unique opportunity to highlight the great work our businesses are doing in tackling global issues.”
