Glasgow 'Ghostbusters parade' videos go viral as hundreds join 'brilliant' south side march

You'd be forgiven for thinking Glasgow was in the midst of a paranormal event last night when a huge parade marched through the south side to the Ghostbusters theme tune.

Videos of the spectacular show have gone viral, with thousands lapping up the bizarre Halloween scene on the most haunting of nights. Footage filmed from a flat in the Southside shows the enthusiastic parade make their way through the city on Sunday, musical instruments and lanterns at the ready.

The Annual Battlefield Lantern Parade traditionally kicks off at Battlefield Primary at 6pm, making its way through the streets to Finn's Place on Ledard Road. Joined by the musical stylings of Brass, Aye?, those who join the parade are encouraged to dress up and bring lanterns, lights and glowsticks.

After taking two years off due to the pandemic, the parade returned in full swing this year. If you heard faint music in the distance that sounded distinctly like the Ghostbusters theme song, you were not alone.

Footage posted online which now has thousands of likes, shows the parade making its way through the streets with the brass band performing an instrumental rendition of the iconic film. Having reached people across the city, and world, the video has brought on a strong reaction from those who think we need ‘more events like this’.

Check out the footage below.

One Twitter user commented: “Those kids will remember that for the rest of their lives. Brilliant.”

Another added: “Absolutely love this, how uplifting. Something fun and positive for a change.”

Birthed from the Battlefield Community Street Party in 2009, organisers have always ensured the Halloween Lantern Parade is completely free - and even set up free workshops for kids prior to the event to ensure they’ve got the materials to participate.

Further afield, the footage caught the attention of one Canadian who commented: “Looks to be tremendous, safe fun. Video procession turning into Dundrennan Road but, what do I know - I’m 3,500km in Canada.”

Closer to home, one user said: “Brilliant, thanks for putting this up and showing us what a wonderful city we have, it’s the people who make it what it is.”

Another added: "What a city. Nowhere like it.

"My love for this city and Scotland in general is unbelievable. Glaswegian people have to be the funniest, most innovative and kindest people at times. People make Glasgow."

The parade was organised by the Battlefield Community Project, and you can find out more about what they do here.
