Glasgow killer who murdered lawyer in own home nearly 30 years ago denied parole

A killer who murdered a Glasgow lawyer in his own home nearly 30 years ago has been told he must remain behind bars because he’s still a danger to the public.

Dean Ryan is currently one of Scotland’s longest-serving prisoners after being convicted of the killing of procurator fiscal Marshall Stormonth in 1994 when he was just 17, alongside older brother Steven, 21.

The pair murdered Stormonth at his home in Glasgow's North Kelvinside and set his body on fire in November of 1993.

Last week three of Scotland’s most senior judges threw out the latest bid by Ryan to get out of jail, the Daily Record reports.

The 45-year-old had a previous parole request refused 15 months ago and then tried to get that decision overturned at the Court of Session in Edinburgh last September by asking for a judicial review.

Judge Lord Summers backed the Parole Board of Scotland decision to keep him behind bars.

Ryan appealed that verdict at the same court last week.

Now three judges – Lord Turnbull, Lord Houseman and Lady Dorrian – have thrown out his appeal.

At the September hearing it was claimed Ryan continued to pose a “high level of risk” to the public.

Details were given of a previous breach of his parole conditions.

Marshall was found dead at his home in North Kelvinside in November 1993.

He had been abducted by the brothers using a replica gun and then forced to drive them to his flat.

They hit him on the head, bound his wrists and ankles, placed ligatures round his neck and set the flat on fire.

Ann Marie Cocozza, of charity FAMS (Families and friends Affected by Murder and Suicide), said: “People like Dean Ryan should only be released when they are fit to be released, not because they are eligible for parole.”

In January 2014 Steven Ryan was freed on parole but in December he stabbed stranger Gordon Murphy with scissors in Govanhill.

He was convicted of the killing and given a second life sentence.

Last year Marshall’s cousin Aileen Caskie said: “Dean Ryan and his brother will always be a serious danger to the public.”
