Glasgow homeless charity welcomes celebrity chef Nick Nairn as volunteer

Celebrity chef Nick Nairn has pledged his support for a Glasgow soup kitchen after spending his Friday evening dishing out meals to the needy.

The Scottish chef, who was the youngest in the country to win a Michelin star, reached out to Homeless Project Scotland on social media with an offer of help.

He worked a shift with the soup kitchen as a volunteer on Friday alongside his wife Julia. Taking to social media, Nick said: "Julia and I drove through to Glasgow to help out under the Heilman umbrella where a brilliant, insightful and humbling organisation 'Homeless Project Scotland' are feeding people who find themselves in difficult circumstances.

"We need to do everything we can to help these guys and then ask the big question about why soup kitchens and food banks are so necessary in 2022."

Homeless Project Scotland, which was started back in 2018, operates the kitchen three nights per week under the Hielanman's Umbrella on Argyle Street.

Volunteers are now seeing around 200 people a night queuing for food with over 2,00 hot meals a week being provided by the charity as well as food parcels.

Founder Colin McInnes said: "Mr Nairn reached out to us on Twitter, offered to help and support us, true to his word he came last night with his wife Mrs Nairn and they both served some food had a tour of our service.

"Mrs Nairn also got stuck in at the end washing pots and both said they would be back again. They have both pledged their support to what we do.

"At Homeless Project Scotland we aim to help people who are homeless, and vulnerable, at the moment due to the cost of living crisis we are finding 200 plus on the street queuing up for food over 2,000 hot meals a week on the streets of Glasgow.

"It’s as simple as this - people need to choose heat or eat, but we hope people can eat with us meaning they can heat. If anyone can help us we have a JustGiving page just now because we need gas to continue to provide hot food please if you can help every little penny makes a difference."

We previously reported how Love Island winner Paige Turley and Finn Tapp took on a volunteering shift with the charity. The pair also pledged their support after the 'eye-opening' experience.
