Glasgow HGV drivers secure 19% pay rise amid country-wide shortages

Hundreds of workers at a Glasgow logistics firm have secured a 19% pay rise.

Cask handlers, heavy goods vehicles, forklift, and shunter drivers employed by Carntyne Transport in Springburn will receive the boost on their hourly pay with a premium on every hour for those working over nine hours a day of up to 35%.

The pay rise represents a basic hourly wage rise increase from £12.60 to £15.00, and after 9 hours from £12.60 to £17.00.

Unite Scotland had been in dispute with the Springburn (Glasgow) based logistics firm, which is part of the Russell Group.

The union secured the pay deal for around 200 workers. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This inflation busting pay deal of 19% on the basic pay is a major victory for our members at Carntyne Transport who led the fight for better jobs, pay and conditions. This deal is yet another example of our members fighting back and driving-up standards across the logistics industry.”

Linda Pollock-Wilson, Unite industrial officer, added: “Unite is delighted to secure a massive 19% increase in the basic pay of workers based at Carntyne Transport.

"We have managed to secure a minimum £15 an hour for HGV drivers, which was our objective, and a significant increase for other workers including cask handlers, forklift drivers, and shunters. This is an excellent deal and demonstrates the power of being a member of Unite.”
