Glasgow graduate Laura Muir wins gold in 1500m at the Commonwealth Games

Scots runner Laura Muir will be bringing home gold after winning the 1500m final at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The University of Glasgow graduate powered her way to the gold in 4:02.76 followed by Northern Ireland's Ciara Mageen who took silver and Australia's Abbey Caldwell who won bronze.

The 29-year-old became the first ever Scot to win the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games. She also won bronze in the 800m on Saturday.

Speaking after the race, Laura told the BBC: "My strength is in my kick. I've got a good bit of speed so I just had to trust it and hope nobody caught me.

"I was tiring up at the end but I just ran as hard as I could for the line."

Before the race, Team Scotland had already cemented their best ever Commonwealth Games performance outside of Glasgow and are now standing at 48 medals.

Nicola Sturgeon was among those to congratulate the athlete. Taking to social media, she said: "Team Scotland absolutely smashing these Commonwealth Games. Massive congratulations to all the medal winners - you've done us all proud."

sportscotland Director of High Performance, Mike Whittingham, said: “Laura Muir has again delivered on the global stage with a stunning race to win gold in the 1500m. She is one of the world’s leading athletes and continues to deliver when it matters most. She is an inspiration to the next generation.”

Fellow Scot Eilish McColgan also got her hands on a gold medal earlier in the week before adding silver to her collection in the 500m on Sunday.
