Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll denied shooting gangland victim Jamie Campbell when he was interviewed about the murder, a court has heard.
Prosecutor Steven Borthwick yesterday revealed Carroll said he “had no idea” why the dad was gunned down when quizzed about the fatal shooting in Glasgow’s Drumchapel in March 2006.
In his closing speech, Mr Borthwick reminded the High Court in Edinburgh how convicted drug dealer Alexander Sutherland said his brother-in-law Carroll – who was shot dead in 2010 – had revealed in a car journey he killed Campbell.
But Mr Borthwick said the evidence showed it was John Kennedy, 41, who took Campbell’s life.
He said bullets recovered in the attack on Campbell contained Kennedy’s DNA.
He said experts believed a person could transfer their DNA on to ammunition by loading bullets into the weapon.
Campbell came from Carntyne, in the east end of Glasgow, while Carroll lived in Milton, in the north of the city.
Reading from Carroll’s statement, Mr Borthwick said: “I don’t know why Jamie Campbell was shot or who had done it. I cannot offer anything further.”
Mr Borthwick told the jurors they should reject Sutherland’s evidence.
Kennedy denies murdering Campbell by shooting him.
The trial continues.
