Glasgow fashion store launches temporary food bank on Queen's funeral

A Glasgow clothing store has announced they will be opening a temporary food bank next Monday.

The Queen's funeral, which take place on Monday September 19, has led to shops, services, schools and even food banks shutting their doors as 'an act of respect'. However, The Blankfaces in Glasgow are opening a temporary food bank as "poverty doesn't stop because a nation mourns".

The Blankfaces is a clothing label and store situated on 427 Great Western Road with an aim to help end homelessness with profits going to organisations.

Announcing their temporary food bank on Instagram they wrote: "On Monday we will be acting as a temporary food bank at 427 Great Western Road.

"If you know of anyone in need of food etc or are looking to donate to a food bank. please feel free to pop in.

"Poverty doesn't stop because 'a nation mourns'. There are many people starving out there and to us we will not stop and stand still if people need us.

"Cheers in advance. T.B.F"

Sharing the news to their 11k followers, the post was quickly met with praise with over a thousand people 'liking it' with comments of the clapping emoji and praising hands being added.

They later added a list of products they are looking for and said: "The response we have had regarding our last post has been utterly overwhelming so first off a huge thank you to you all.

"For anyone who is looking to donate any items for Monday, The UK Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN) state this list of food/sanitary products are the most desirable for food banks/people in need.

"Please make sure to have a look at dates of tinned goods before donating, things with a long shelf life are preferred but any food in date is more than welcome.

"You are all amazing."

It comes as a number of food banks across Scotland, including some in Glasgow are expected to close on Monday.

Christian charity Blythswood Care, runs 11 food banks across Scotland and announced they would be closing.

In a Facebook post, they said: "Monday, September 19, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral, will be a national bank holiday.

"Blythswood Care will close on this day. We want to allow our staff the opportunity to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning. We shall also be pausing all social media activity until after the State Funeral."

Blythswood Care added "no one should miss out" as a result of the closure on Monday.

The charity added: "Referring agents who dispense foodbank vouchers are being advised that we are closed on Monday. Some key agents do hold emergency food boxes. Our food banks will be open on Tuesday."

Meanwhile, according to the Daily Record, volunteers at Glasgow North West Foodbank said: "People going without food does not stop. All of our foodbanks will be open at the normal times."

You can donate products at The Blankface 427 Great Western Road.
