Glasgow electrician hits council with £1210 bill after new car damaged by potholes

A driver has hit Glasgow City Council with a bill worth more than £1000 after his new car was badly damaged by potholes.

Cody McKitkkel has forked out the cash to fix a cracked wheel and buy two new tyres after they were burst on the city's dodgy roads.

The electrician has only had his new motor for four months and has been left fuming following two incidents involving potholes.

He told Glasgow Live: "The first time was on Great Western Road. I just picked my friend up and we were driving back home towards Anniesland. It was at night so it was quiet, dark and it was rainy which meant the water covered the pothole and I couldn't really see it.

"As soon as I went through the set of lights I hit the pothole and it was so bad. I remember looking at my pal and he looked at me, then the notification came up saying the tyre was burst.

"Luckily I had the run flat so I managed to drive home a mile and a half with that. When it burst again I never had the run flat so I just had to leave my car up in Whitecrook.

"It makes you feel so down because you work hard to get a nice car and then it keeps getting damaged."

After getting his car fixed the Maryhill man decided to ask the council if they would cough up the cash for the repairs, however, his request is still being discussed.

Cody said: "I put in a claim form for the first time and that happened two months ago and I'm still waiting to hear back.

"They said they are discussing it and it is under investigation but I hope I get paid for that because it was £1,000. I'm raging.

"It's bad enough when it's your car but when it's new you want to enjoy and all of sudden you just can't. The roads are so bad, it's like driving on Mars."

The electrician struggles to understand why the roads are so bad and believes work on the poor surfaces should be of paramount importance.

He also doesn't think there should be any excuse when it comes to fixing the various potholes and that authorities should a take a leaf out of their European counterparts' book.

The raging driver said: "I worked in Switzerland for eight months and the roads are perfect. They are thousands of meters above sea level and they've got the best road.

"In the summer it's 40C and in the winter it is -20C and they withstand it no bother. The roads are immaculate over there. Then you come here and every road is an absolute disgrace."

Glasgow City Council have confirmed that Cody's claim is currently under investigation.

A spokesperson said: “All pothole-related claims are determined on the individual merits of each case and in the context of our policy on road safety inspections and repairs.

“The policy means we take a risk-assessed approach to road maintenance that prioritises the most dangerous faults while also seeking to ensure repairs are permanent at the first time of asking .

“Winter is always a challenging time for road conditions due to the impact of frost, snow and rain on the road surface and potholes can appear suddenly at any time.

“The volume and weight of traffic will also have an on-going effect on road surfaces.

“Recent data indicated that over 71 per cent of Glasgow’s roads are in an acceptable condition, which places the city among the best performing roads authorities in Scotland.

“Our road safety inspection and repairs policy has been developed in accordance with the code of practice set out by the Society of Chief Officers of Transportation in Scotland, which is followed by other Scottish local authorities.”
